The Renovation of the
ROCKBOURNE WAR MEMORIAL

We were commissioned to carry out extensive renovation work to this memorial.
This work involved the cleaning of the stone, steps and surrounding area. In addition to this, old weathered stone was removed and replaced with newly quarried material, in this case Chilmark stone from a nearby quarry. Finally, the lettering was given a fresh coat of paint. As the photographs show, the effort was rewarded by the results shown and the comments made by the passing inhabitants of Rockbourne whilst working on site during May.

The survey begins, a thorough examination of the memorial takes place to establish exactly what work is required.
As the pictures show, the lettering panels were in a very poor condition.
This is the front of the memorial showing two styles of lettering, raised in panels and incised. Both style were re-painted.
An example of the weathered stone, the pieces were removed by hand and new stone supplied.
The stone has been removed and is now ready for the new stone to be skilfully fitted by our mason Steve Mann.
As you can see, Steve as matched the new ‘Chilmark’ stone in perfectly.
You can see a larger image by clicking it, this applies to all images.
Detail of the re-painted letters, it takes great skill to accomplish this type of work, especially on site.
